Perspective from the Hunger Games
After weeks of reading The Hunger Games, and without giving too much away - my mindset has been (hopefully) permanently altered. For those of you who aren’t familiar, setting takes place in the future, and what used to be America (now known as Panem) has been divided into districts, each with a specialization (industry, agriculture, mining, etc.), and are generally poor. The Capitol on the other hand is overflowing with wealth, with it’s people paying for body altering surgeries, wearing vibrant colors, and engaging in behavior non-existent in any of the districts. Coming from the poorest district, Katniss (the main character) compares her life to the the life of the inhabitants of the Capitol.
I live in America, where everything I ever need is almost a mirror image of a Capitol life. “Food at the push of a button” (The Hunger Games), constantly changing styles of clothes for me to purchase, and a house to go home to. Please don’t mistake this as a list of things I’m bragging about - this is a continually growing list of things I’m thankful for. As I watch commercials and “reality” shows on TV, suddenly a taste of disgust fills my mouth.
If you haven’t read the books yet, I high recommend them - though as a word of warning they get violent at times. However, the fact that each chapter ends as a cliffhanger will keep you reading…just in time for the movie!
